Can You Remove Any Birds From Inside Roofs?

It’s a sound that can drive a homeowner mad. First, it’s a rustle and a scratch. Then, it’s the chirping. Then, it’s the flapping. Before you know it, you’re lying awake at 5 AM listening to what sounds like a small, feathered football team holding practice in your ceiling. Birds in the roof are a very common Melbourne problem. And when you discover it, your first instinct is to get them out. Fast. But is it always possible? At Graysons, we specialise in protecting your roof and gutters, and bird issues are a huge part of that. The answer to this blog question is complicated.

It all comes down to which birds, where they are, and what stage they’re at. Unfortunately, it also includes a situation where removal is simply not an option.

The Unwanted Tenants. Who’s Moving In?

While native birds are generally protected, the vast majority of roof-nesting complaints in Melbourne come from notorious invasive species. We’re talking about Pigeons, the aggressive, territorial Indian Mynas and the equally problematic Starlings, which build massive, messy nests in roof cavities. These birds see your roof as a five-star hotel: warm, dry, elevated, and safe from predators. They are experts at exploiting any small gap, squeezing under tiles, through broken flashing, or into un-meshed vents to gain access.

Beyond Noise. The Real Dangers of Roof Nests

If the noise isn’t bad enough, the damage these birds cause can be significant. The sheer amount of twigs, grass, and debris they bring in can completely block your gutters and downpipes. This leads to water overflowing back into your eaves and roof space, often causing rot and serious structural damage.

The danger isn’t just from water. In a dry Melbourne summer, a large, dry nest in a hot roof cavity is a very real fire hazard, especially if it’s built near electrical wiring. Furthermore, bird nests and droppings are a breeding ground for bird mites, tiny parasites that can migrate into your living areas. Pest birds can carry nasty diseases, potentially posing a health risk to your pets.

The Worst Issue. Trapped Chicks

This is the most distressing part of the problem, and one we encounter all too often. Indian Mynas and Starlings are “cavity nesters.” They will often build their nest inside the eaves of your roof. Sometimes, a chick will fall or wander from the nest and slip down into an inaccessible part of your home. This often happens when you open up the roof and are trying to remove the nest, the chicks panic and try to escape inwards. They are quite small and will become stuck in areas that are almost impossible to reach.

And it leads to the question we get asked most: “Can you cut it out?”

If one was completely obsessed with extracting a trapped bird from inside the wall you might resort to this. Ironically this is just making an even bigger entry point where other potential pests can now get in.

“Can You Get the Stuck Bird Out?” – Our Honest Answer

This is where we have to be upfront about our limitations.

Grayson’s is limited in our ability to disassemble parts of your roof to retrieve a stuck bird.

Our team are highly trained experts in roof and gutter maintenance, cleaning, and bird proofing. We are not builders, roofers, or demolition experts. To retrieve a bird from inside a wall cavity is a complex task. It would require you to pinpoint its exact location, then possibly cut holes through plasterboard or external cladding, and navigate hidden electrical wires and plumbing. Similarly, reaching a bird deep in the roof void could mean removing too  many tiles and compromising your home’s waterproofing. These actions are specialist work that carries a significant risk of causing major, expensive structural damage. It’s not that we don’t want to help, we do. But we are not equipped or qualified to perform this kind of deconstruction. One small Indian Myna or Starling chick is a very small creature, so when it dies it will not cause too much odour at all.

What About Wildlife Rescuers?

This is a great question. While Victorian wildlife rescue groups do incredible work, they face the exact same physical limitations. They are unlikely to be able to bring tools to cut into your walls or remove your roof tiles. Sadly, in almost all of these “stuck chick” cases, no one can safely reach the bird without turning the rescue into a major construction project.

Why Are The Chicks More Likely to Be Stuck in the Roof

  • They haven’t learnt how to leave the nest yet
  • The adult birds will fly away the moment a tradie or other human climbs up the ladder to the nest area.
  • Sheer panic, the chicks don’t know what to do and just move inwards into the roof void.
  • If the nest is inside the corner point of your roof this usually makes it much more difficult to remove the nest.

The Only True Solution, Prevention

This is why prevention is not just the best solution—it’s the only solution. The “cure” for a stuck bird is often impossible, which makes preventing it from ever happening again a critical part of home maintenance. This is where we can help.

The Graysons Solution, From Clean-up to Prevention

Our process is designed to permanently solve your bird problem.

First, a Thorough Clean-Out

It all starts with removing the source. Our team will conduct a full clean of your gutters and roof, removing (where possible) old nesting materials, debris, and blockages. This gets rid of the mess and the “welcome mat” that attracts other birds.

Next, We Identify All Entry Points

Once the area is clean, our experts will conduct a “bird’s-eye” inspection of your entire roof. We locate every single gap—under tiles, in vents, around flashing, that birds are using or could use in the future.

Finally, We Can Install Professional Bird Proofing

This is the key. We don’t just “shoo” the birds away; we lock them out. We use high-quality, durable materials like gutter guards, bird mesh, and valley protection to securely and permanently seal off all access points.

By bird-proofing your roof, you are ensuring no birds can get back in to build a new nest. You stop the noise, the damage, and the risk, and you make sure you never have to experience the heartbreak of a trapped-bird scenario again.

If you’re hearing the sounds of unwanted tenants, don’t wait for the problem to get worse.
